Zilker Park Great Lawn Reopening After ACL 2026: Dates and Delays

  • October 8, 2026

The City of Austin lists Zilker's Great Lawn as closed through Sunday, October 18. That date was last updated September 8, before ACL Fest's first weekend turned the lawn to mud. Look at past ACL years, the contract that pays for the repairs, and the holiday schedule waiting in late November, and October 19 looks like the earliest the lawn could reopen, not the likely date. The rest of Zilker returns first, mostly within days of the festival ending. The lawn is likely to come back last, and once it reopens, the Zilker Holiday Tree and Trail of Lights follow soon after.

What happened on the second day

KXAN reported a little more than half an inch of rain on Friday and Saturday of the first weekend. On Saturday, October 3, the Great Lawn "crumbled into a sludge field," and gates opened two hours late, at 2 p.m. Axios counted roughly 2 inches across Thursday and Friday. That's a different two-day window, but the soaked ground was the same. Crews spread mulch and regraded parts of the field during the festival. Council Member Ryan Alter, whose district includes Zilker, called the damage "unacceptable" and said the lawn "needs to be available for the public again."

C3 Presents is responsible for the repair. Austin Parks and Recreation told KXAN that under the festival's contract, ACL restores the Great Lawn and surrounding areas each year, "including replacement of any grass needed," and that "all efforts are exhausted to open Zilker Park's Great Lawn as soon as possible." C3 said it remediates any damaged areas after every festival, and that this year will be no different. Neither statement gave a finish date. Axios noted that the posted reopening is October 19, eight days after the final festival day. It also said that whether the lawn opens even by the end of October "now feels up in the air."

What earlier falls suggest

A posted end date covers festival teardown. It doesn't cover turf recovery, and in recent years the city has also scheduled lawn maintenance after cleanup. Here are three earlier falls:

Year What happened When the lawn reopened
2009 Festival ran Oct. 2–4 in heavy mud; Pollstar's Oct. 8 report expected reopening at month's end Austin Parks Foundation reported the lawn open Oct. 30
2023 Separate lawn maintenance closure from Oct. 21 to Nov. 1 KXAN reported it open Nov. 1
2025 ACL cleanup ended Oct. 19; aeration, irrigation and nutrient work scheduled Oct. 20–31, weather permitting Closure posted through end of October

2009 is the closest match to this year, because the mud came during the festival itself. That year the lawn reopened 26 days after the final show. In 2023 and 2025, the lawn stayed closed until about the start of November because of a planned maintenance window after cleanup. The city's current notice lists only the ACL closure ending October 18 and mentions no separate maintenance window. Watch that page for an updated notice after the second weekend.

The rest of Zilker comes back sooner

The lawn is the slowest piece, and the rest of the park reopens on a faster schedule. In date order:

  1. Barton Springs Road. The full closure for the second weekend runs from Thursday, October 8, at 7 p.m. to Monday, October 12, at 6 a.m. Lane reductions follow from October 12 through October 16, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  2. Zilker Botanical Garden. The garden closed October 1 for abatement, renovation and maintenance and is scheduled to reopen Friday, October 16. The city's release says the main building may stay closed longer.
  3. Zilker parking lots. Stratford, Pecan Grove, Polo Picnic, Disc Golf, Moonlight Tower, Rock Garden and Playscape lots are each closed for different stretches through October 18.
  4. The Great Lawn. It's posted to reopen after October 18. Past years point to late October or early November.

Some parts of the park never closed. Per the city's festival bulletin, Barton Springs Pool, the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, the Barton Creek Greenbelt, the Zilker disc golf course and the Zilker Playscape stay open through September and October. On festival weekends, the only pool entrance is off Azie Morton Road. The Barton Hills Neighborhood Association reminds residents that signed no-parking restrictions are enforced on event Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The Greenbelt can be reached without driving into Zilker at all. The city lists the Zilker trailhead at 2212 William Barton Drive, Spyglass/Barton Sky at 1601 Spyglass Drive, and the Barton Hills School Park/Homedale access at 2009 Homedale Drive.

The pool stays open, with construction underway

Barton Springs Pool has kept its regular schedule, 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. On Thursdays it's swim-at-your-own-risk from 5 to 9 a.m., closed for cleaning until 7 p.m., then guarded again until 10. Two construction projects are still running around it.

The first is a retaining wall along the pool's eastern edge. The city scheduled the project to start September 8, beginning with the removal of 37 trees and other vegetation. The city's timeline has engineering assessment and design running September through December 2026, repairs in early 2027, and a completion date not yet set. The city says it doesn't expect to close the pool. Swimmers may see temporary fencing, construction activity and some changes in shade along that side.

The second is the Joan Means Khabele Bathhouse. Its renovated restrooms and showers reopened in October 2025 and are entered from the pool side. The project schedule still says rotunda construction will be complete in "Summer 2026." The city's latest closure entry, updated June 24, still lists the rotunda main entry and west-side work area as closed. No newer public update has confirmed whether the rotunda has opened. Once it does, the main pool entrance moves back to the rotunda, so swimmers will walk past the redesigned Sheffield Education Center and Splash! exhibit on the way in.

New places on South Lamar while the lawn is fenced

Several new places opened along South Lamar this summer and fall, and all are open while the lawn recovers.

  • Alloy Autohaus, 2706 S. Lamar Blvd., soft-opened September 5. It's a vintage-car showroom with Second Wind Coffee pouring inside. Roadrunner Relics, an antique shop on the same property, opened July 11.
  • Cuvée Coffee opened August 3 inside The Code at 2323 S. Lamar Blvd. It serves morning coffee and switches to wine, beer and cocktails in the evening.
  • Mendocino Farms opened September 22 at 1100 S. Lamar Blvd., Suite 1125.
  • Frost Bank's South Lamar Financial Center opened September 28 at 3001 S. Lamar Blvd., Building G, in part of the former Half Price Books space.

Tumble 22 has also announced a hot-chicken restaurant at 2929 S. Lamar Blvd., planned for 2027.

The lawn's open window before the holidays

Whenever the lawn does reopen, it won't have long before the holiday season. The city lists the 2026 Zilker Holiday Tree season as November 29 through January 1, with the lighting ceremony on Sunday, November 29, at 6 p.m. Austin Trail of Lights runs December 10–23, with a preview party December 4. The Fun Run is Saturday, December 5. It starts at the Zilker Tree and continues into the Trail. The organizer says its 2026 street-closure schedule is still "coming soon." In 2025, KXAN pointed out that more Zilker closures came as the Trail prepared to open.

If the lawn opens on October 19, it gets close to six weeks of open use before the tree lighting. If it follows the 2009 or 2023 pattern, that drops to about four weeks, and Trail of Lights setup will cut into it once the closure dates are posted. Alter told KXAN he was worried about how the park would look for events scheduled later this year. Two dates will settle this: the city's next update to the Great Lawn closure notice, and the Trail of Lights closure schedule.
